Jacob Petersen constructed this while experimenting with octahedral symmetry. The shape is isomorphic to the shape of the balls in the default octahedral style, as you can verify here. I’m guessing I started from a similar design when I constructed that ball shape; I know I modified it to make the rectangular panels slightly trapezoidal, so that struts for those holes would be correctly orientable.
